Traditional Rummy Rules

Rummy comes in all sorts of variations these days. Traditional Rummy was one of the earliest forms of the game still played today. Though Traditional Rummy is no longer the most common way to play, it is still popular enough among live and online Rummy fans. Below, you will find detailed instructions of Traditional Rummy rules.

Traditional Rummy Rules – Objective

The object of Traditional Rummy is to be the first player to run completely out of cards. This is done by “melding”, creating “sets” and “runs” of cards that are placed on the table. A player may win a hand by melding all cards, or discarding their final card onto the discard pile.

Traditional Rummy Rules – Useful Terms

Below are some terms you’ll need to know in order to play Traditional Rummy.

Set: A Set is a type of Meld that involves three or more cards of the same value, such as 5-5-5, or J-J-J-J.

Run: A Run is a type of Meld that involves 4 or more cards running in sequence. The rules of Traditional Rummy require each Run to be made in a single suit, such as 4h-5h-6h-7h, or 9c-Tc-Jc-Qc-Kc.

Meld: To Meld is to place a single, or multiple Sets/Runs in front of you, face-up, on the table. Melding is how players get rid of the cards in their hand, thus getting closer to the ultimate goal of winning.

Building: Once a player has Melded, they are allowed to Build on the Melds of other players with cards from their own hand. If, for instance, a player has Melded 7d-8d-9d-Td, and you are holding 5d and 6d, you may Build the player’s Meld by adding your 5d and 6d.This helps players get rid of all cards in their hand.

Going Out: There are two ways to win a hand of Traditional Rummy. Going Out is the easiest way. A player Goes Out when he has Melded and Built all of his cards, or Melded all but one card, placing the final card on the discard pile. A player is only termed Going Out if they do not run out of cards on the same turn in which they place their first Meld on the table.

Going Rummy: Going rummy is the best way to win a hand of Traditional Rummy. This means the player runs completely out of cards on the same turn that he/she places his first Meld on the table. The final card can be placed within a Meld, used to Build another player’s Meld, or placed on the discard pile.

Traditional Rummy Rules – Game Play

Traditional Rummy is a game for 4 players using a single, 52-card deck of playing cards. A full game consists of a number of hands, so for the first hand, the dealer is determined by a drawing of cards – high card deals. The cards are shuffled and cut, and then each player is dealt 10 cards.

Starting with the first player left of the dealer, players will take turns.

Each play begins with the player drawing one card from the draw pile (formed by the remaining deck of cards after the deal), and ends with the player discarding one card into the discard pile. In between, the player can Meld any Sets and/or Runs they may have, and Build onto the Melds of other players. The only time a player will not discard is if they Meld/Build all of the remaining cards in their hand.

When a player runs completely out of cards, the hand is over and score is taken.

Traditional Rummy Rules – Scoring & Winning

At the end of each hand, the score is calculated as follows: Aces = 11 points 10s and Face Cards = 10 points 2 – 9 = Face Value

There are no points awarded for Going Out, but if a player wins by going Rummy, all other players receive -25 points, called penalty points (i.e. 25 points are subtracted from their score).

Only the cards remaining in every other players hand are added up. The winner of the hand receives all of these points.

In order to win a game of Traditional Rummy, a player must reach the pre-determined winning score. This score is agreed upon by all players before the game begins. A typical winning score could be anywhere from 100 to 500 points. The first player to reach this score wins!
